CINCINNATI, OH—BDwest has selected its design competition winners, which will be constructed and displayed at the show in April.

Categories included a fusion taco bar, a guestroom and a bathroom. Participating firms had to meet budget parameters ranging from $100 per square foot to a total budget of $12,500.

Hard Rock International won the fusion taco bar category. Mike Marshall, president/CEO of Marshall Hotels & Resorts, Tracy Borkum, founder of Urban Kitchen Group and Carl “Chip” Isaacson judged the category.

Studio Gaia won the Best Guestroom: Hot Concept category, while Design Group Carl Ross won the award for Best Guestroom: Cool Space. Unlike the other winners, Studio Gaia’s concept will be built at BDNY, scheduled for Nov. 10-11. This category was judged by Mark Harmon, CEO, Auberge Resorts; David Sussman, SVP, hotel development and design, Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group; and George Scammell, VP of global design, Wyndham Worldwide.

FODA Design won the bathroom category. Brendan McNamara, SVP, brand development, Hampshire Hotels & Resorts/Dream Hotels & Night Hotels; Leslie Shammas, executive director design and construction, Fairmont Raffles Hotels International; and Jay M. Pecotte, director of project development-hotels, Hard Rock International judged the category.

In addition, BDwest invited Stonehill & Taylor, Design Poole and Cauhaus Design to create design spaces on the trade fair floor. Mike Suomi and his StoneHill &Taylor team will design the bar at the center of the show floor; Trisha Poole and her firm will build a spa; and Toby Schemerhorn and the Cauhaus Design staff will design an al fresco dining space on the terrace.
